Media Faculty Vision and Intent
Media: It’s more than just movies
We recognise that our students are ‘digital dependents’, living a world that is heavily influenced by the media in all its forms. Our vision is to harness this natural affinity, using it to engage and inspire students whilst also educating them about the power and influence of media companies to ensure that they grow up to have a healthy, positive relationship with the media.
By studying a range of products, we aim to make students become fluent in a new language that facilitates the development of their visual literacy and become skilled in the analysis of products, enabling them to ‘read between the lines’ of what they see, watch, hear, play and interact with; from the connotations of colour choices and font styles to the impact of a camera angle or film score. Our intention is that they use this knowledge to understand how representations are created; examining audiences in relation to demographics and psychographics to understand the diverse society in which we live; and explore the different contexts in which products are created by understanding concepts such patriarchy, femininity, masculinity and ethnicity and how these impact on media production and consumption.
In addition to all of this, we want students to see how studying media can maximise their potential and increase opportunities for them in a range of creative sectors, regardless of their background, giving them the skills to thrive in a world where media is paramount.
